ABS Boomerangs

Image
I have made boomerangs out of in the past and it's only until now I have realised the benefits of ABS over other plastics, the density is just right for performance in just about all the boomerang range, the only exception being MTA which is still made from phenolic. I have reduced the size of all the boomerangs and now they are mini in size, they feature the same performance as bigger boomerangs but are more compact and easier to throw, also they are easier to transport as they take up very little space.   Here are some photos of the current range, I will keep adding new boomerangs to the Catalog from time to time. All boomerangs are available from  One Boomerangs

Hi all, I have just come back to boomerangs from a long break, with work and family commitments something had to give, anyway I am back and feeling all enthused with many great ideas, the range of boomerang designs has been trimmed down and I now offer a my boomerangs in a variety of plastics. I am exclusively using fluorescent paint on all boomerangs as it is so much easier on the eyes, my main colours are fluorescent pink & orange, I also spray a clear coat which really makes the boomerangs pop, they look much better. The plastics I am using are ABS, phenolic, and polypropylene all have their benefits for different designs, ABS is for more recreational boomerangs, phenolic is more for the boomerangs traveling 50+ meters, the polypropylene is great for the trick catch boomerangs and the fast catch designs. Take a look at the photos and remember these boomerangs are available from ONE Boomerangs, visit my site at www.oneboomerangs.com   #boomerangs #australia #austra...

Amazing Night Throw

Image
I cant remember what year it was but somewhere in the 90s ? a few of my boomerang friends decided to go into the city of Sydney and do a night boomerang throw, it was late and dark but this was a great idea, from memory the photo was to be used as part of a presentation for an upcoming boomerang competition and to be given away as part of the awards. Gunther, Kevin and I hopped in the car and drove to the city, we found an amazing spot right next to the harbor, the lights from the buildings were shining on the water, the Sydney opera house and Harbor bridge were in full view, this was the perfect setting for a photo, all our boomerangs had sparklers attached to get the effect of the flight of the boomerang, we threw and threw all trying to get the honor of the perfect shot, my boomerang landed in the harbor, Kevin said to me "Go on be a man dive in and get it" my response "There is no way I am going in to get that" it was dark and scary looking in the water and I ...

Grippy surface or smooth, that is the question ?

Image
I've made many boomerangs and I've done pretty paint jobs, all smooth and shiny for customers, this is fine and the customers I'm sure appreciate it but smooth can also mean slippery, of course this depends on the conditions and the throwers grip and hand strength.  Some boomerangs on the market feature really glossy finishes but very little grip, especially when wet, of course I can't speak for all boomerangs on the market but I have noticed some throwers adding grip tape to a smooth boomerang when I think it could be added during the finishing of the boomerang.  Of course in the end it comes down to what the customer wants. The above picture of a ONE Boomerangs  "Spirit" boomerang features a very grippy surface and I believe it still looks presentable. These days I prefer to add texture to the surface of the boomerang to increase grip, sure they mightn't be as pretty to look at but I have always placed boomerang performance as the #1 cr...

Why I Choose Plastic for Boomerang Making

Image
Well, when I first started making boomerangs I could see it was a hard task, not only was good quality plywood hard to find but if you did find some it cost The earth to buy, I did try a wide variety of plywood, everything from Queensland maple, Hoop pine, Meranti and Finish birch, all reasonable quality but I couldn't find any consistency from sheet to sheet, the grain varied a lot and the density was always different and not consistent, this doesn't help repeat ability when making boomerangs. I like the fact to that plastic is incredibly easy to tune without breaking, especially polypropylene. Then I had a bright spark, what about I use plastic, not only is it consistent in density but it's easily available and there is a diverse range of plastic that are more readily up the the job, polypropyle was available just down the road from where I lived, this was great, the only one that seemed hard to get was phenolic but a few phone calls sorted that out and I c...

Help in boomerang land

Well, I have to say it is an amazing experience just to help people,  I have learnt a lot from sharing what I know from years of making boomerangs,  every now and then I get people asking me all sorts of questions, mostly regarding how to throw and tune boomerangs, it's something that is learnt over time just like anything really,  the only difference is there isn't much information about the subject!!, there is probably two really informative boomerang books that go into great depth on the subject.  I have found some new and amazing friends on social media,  some are completely new to the craft and some have been making a lot longer than me, all this keep it interesting and only want to help people more and more,  it also give me an avenue to share my information with those that want to know more.  I think the social media has been so important to connect with other boomerang throwers,  I have made some great friends that will continue in this a...

Persistence

Image
When I started making boomerangs there wasn't much help available regarding how to do this and how to do that, I taught myself, I asked lots of questions to fellow boomerang throwers but when you are competing against other throwers it can be difficult to get information because after all they want to win too! I actually questioned a thrower as to why he doesn't help me, his response was "Of course I don't help you because you are a really good thrower". The word persistence springs to mind when I think about my struggle to design a better boomerang that would suit my needs in competition, I can remember buying sheet after sheet of a variety of plastics in order to learn the craft, most of the plastic ended up as waste and went into the bin, it seemed to me just too hard to learn how to shape the different boomerangs into flying and returning objects, I would spend countless hours running back and forth to the park, making subtle adjustments in tuning to get the...
